Abstract
George S. Patton Jr. was a renowned, if not debatable figure of World War II that contributed a big part in the defeat of the German Army. Patton graduated from West point on June 11 1909 where he was appointed as a second lieutenant. Shortly after graduating West Point Patton married Beatrice Ayer who he dated while he was attending West Point. During Patton’s Army career he led Soldiers in both World War I and World War II. During the beginning of the war, Patton was the commanding General for the Western Task Force that invade North Africa. He was in charge of about 33,000 Soldiers and 100 ships during this campaign. This was the only all American task force during the beginning of the war and also the first time the United States would be involve with the war. Patton planned and seized North Africa so well that the Sultan of Morocco recognized him by presenting him with an award of their own called the “Les Loins dans leurs Tanieres tremblent en le voyant approcher” A few months later Patton relinquish his command of the 1st Armored Corps and relieves Major General Lloyd Fredendall of II Corps. Patton then immediately started enforcing standards with in his new unit in order to instill discipline. Like all other units he has commanded, Patton demanded rigors training from his men. He was a tough leader however he was well respected by his men under him. The next major operation he would lead his army to was the Sicily Campaign. During this campaign he would be commanding the Seventh United States Army. Throughout this campaign Patton successfully maneuvered his men and defeat the German army with many victories. However during this time period, Patton’s reputation would undergo a negative impact on his career, when he slaps a Soldier going through Post traumatic stress. They not only knew of Patton, but they also found Patton’s Army as a threat throughout the war. Patton was made a decoy by the United States Army to distract the German Army for their initial invasion to German. Patton was made in charge of a fictitious army to deceiving the German forces to thinking that Patton was preparing to conduct a large scale operation to invade Pas de Calais France. With that, the US Army with their Allies were able to take the beaches of Normandy. About a month after the beaches of Normandy was captured, Patton returned back to combat. Patton’s 3rd Army would then sweep through Europe into northern France. During the Germany offensive Patton’s 3rd Army played a key role. During this offense, Patton would plan one of the most remarkable operation of the war. Patton would end up planning to disengage and reposition 3 full division ( 4th Armored Division, U.S. 80th Infantry Division and the U.S. 26th Infantry Division) in order to initiate a counterattack to the north to assist the 101st Airborne Division which was about to be overrun by German forces at Bastogne. In the end Patton would end up maneuvering 6 divisions and relieving and resupplying 101 Airborne Division in a matter of 4 days. This was not only the most well or castrated plan ever done in during the war but it was one of the biggest battles of Patton’s
