George Washington:

The First Democratic Leader of the Free World

Thesis: George Washington was a man whose impact on history changed America and the world forever. He took a stand against the world’s most powerful country and the most powerful military on the face of the Earth, leading America when few would dare, and helping to establish a new vision for governance that was based on democratic principles.

George Washington was born in a time of history when the United States was not even conceived as an idea. At the time the colonies were content to be under the rule of the leading power of the day Great Britain with its impressive army of Redcoats and one of the most powerful navies in the world in 1732. Born to a family in the Virginian autocracy he lived in comfort while African slaves took care of the outdoor and indoor labor of the Washington’s family estate. As a teenager he surveyed western lands on the behalf of his patron Lord Fairfax. After his father died in 1742 he moved in with his brother Lawrence into his half brother’s newly acquired mansion named Mt.Vernon after Lawrence's commanding officer. The states taxed each other and each had its own form of currency and state militia. Soldiers and officers from the Revolution were ready to mutiny the county they had just fought for. Washington being the type of person he was showed his human characteristics and won them over from mutinying. Nonviolent and violent mutinies alike showed that the the Articles of Confederation America’s first document used for governance needed to be revised and ultimately done away with.
