General George Washington had a very important decision to make that had the possibility of completely ending the revolutionary war, or saving it. Washington was in a very tough situation. The men’s enlistment contracts were getting close to expiring, the amount of food and supplies were low, and the morale of all of his troops was extremely low. Something needed to happen to get the Americans back on track. Washington decided to march to Trenton and Princeton late in the war to fight the British, and it paid off. In this war nobody thought that the Americans were going to win, and the revolutionary war was going to end in a sudden defeat.
One of the main reasons that the Battle of Trenton was so important was that it boosted the American soldiers morale. It helped the American military grow with the new recruits and the old ones that reenlisted in the war to continue fighting. The British had created a plan to destroy the Continental Army on January 2, 1777. With this information General Washington had, he decided to create a plan to leave Trenton secretively and march to Princeton. This march was very successful because they deceived the British into thinking the Americans had never left.
This march was very important in assisting the Americans to win the revolutionary war. With the Continental Army making this move, it helped save them from a very depressing retreat that could have put the Americans back to square one after the hard fought battle at Trenton. If the Americans would have gone back to square one, they wouldn’t have gained as many troops as they had from the win at Trenton, and all of the supplies they would have gained from the Battle of Trenton would have been lost.
