The law review article I chose was written by a Law Professor regarding police claims on self-defense. The author talks about Zimmerman’s murder trial and how the judge refused to allow prosecution to argue that the neighborhood watch volunteer racially profiled Martin. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder for shooting a 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin. The state of Florida filed an affidavit of probable cause stating that Zimmerman profiled and confronted Martin and shot him to death when Martin didn’t commit any crimes. Zimmerman claims he shot Martin in self-defense.
George Zimmerman was not guilty and created many angry protesters. He won by the sole witness of the case.
Treyvon Martin was a teenager who was unarmed, shot, and killed in Sanford, Florida. The incident happened on February 26, 2012. The officer who shot Martin followed Martin around outside when he then confronted Martin. They seemed to have some kind of argument, and then officer Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest. Zimmerman was questioned about his confrontation, where he pleaded self-defense.
And because it’s so impassioned, it’s typically disproportionate to the original injury—meaning that it usually can’t be viewed as just. The punishment may fit the crime, but it’s often an exaggerated response to another’s perceived offense. (And I use the qualifier “perceived” purposely here. On February 26, 2012, a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a man named George Zimmerman. George was found not guilty in July of 2013. President Obama spoke upon the ruling of this case. “It could have been me 35 years ago” stated Obama. Most African Americans went through being followed in the stores, hearing the doors on the car lock as they passed by, or had a woman move her purse closer to her as they walked in the elevator.
After being instructed to stay in his SUV by the police and to not approach the person, Zimmerman ultimately chose to defy those instructions and to take matters into his own hands. A physical altercation began between the two which left George Zimmerman with a bloody nose and blood coming from the back of his head and also left seventeen year-old Trayvon Martin shot in the chest and

This teenager was walking along the sidewalk to his home when George Zimmerman, a member of the community watch, called the police and reported a suspicious black boy was roaming the streets. During this time period there had been several robberies in the area. So, instead of waiting for backup from the police, Zimmerman approached Martin on his own and questioned him. There was soon an altercation between the two and Zimmerman eventually shot the teenager. When the police arrived on the scene, Trayvon was already dead.
By the time police had reached the scene, Zimmerman had already shot Martin, who was pronounced dead a few minutes after their arrival. Zimmerman was willingly taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder in the death of a teen by shooting. Second-degree murder is a killing that wasn’t calculated and resulted from an assault in which the victim’s death was a definite possibility. About a month later the state of Florida prosecuted Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin. The case quickly became the spotlight for national media outlets like FOX and CNN (Linder). According to an article in The New York Times, Many experts were brought in, to examine the evidence. One of whom was Dr. Vincent Di Maio, an expert in forensic pathology. Dr. Vincent Di Maio confirmed that by the direction of the bullet through Martins chest, that Martin was on top during the fight (Padnani and Griggs).
“Racial profiling punishes innocent individuals for the past actions of those who look and sound like them…” Civil Rights activist, Benjamin Jealous’ words are very relevant to the case of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was murdered at age seventeen by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch patrol in his neighborhood, where Martin also lived. Zimmerman called 911 to report Martin as a “real suspicious guy” “a black male” walking around the neighborhood. Martin wore a hoodie on his way home from 7-Eleven with intentions of going home, but Zimmerman continued to follow Martin.
