1) INTRODUCTION
The world has experienced a steady increase in life expectancy in this century. The dramatic increase in average life expectancy imposes a great challenge in healthcare. World Health Organisation (2015) reported between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years of age will double from 12% to 22%.
The most rapidly growing segment of the Singapore population is the older people. Older people is defined by the World Health Organisation (2015) as a person of the chronological age of 65 years and above. The main intention of quantitative research is to measure concepts or variables objectively and to analyse the relationship between them using numerical and statistical ways (Parahoo, 2006). This approach is ideal for this research as it help to determine if there is a relationship between nurses equipped with gerontological knowledge to their attitude and satisfaction in caring for the older people. Numerical data of the nurses’ attitude, knowledge and satisfaction will be collected through a questionnaire and statistical analysis will be used to analyse the relationship between …show more content…
Therefore it is appropriate to apply the Pearson’s r correlation to measure if there is a strong association between the three factors.
5.4 Nurses’ Attrition Rate
The nurses’ attrition rate will be analysed after a year from the completion of programme. It will be calculated as below:
The details of the nurses who leave the ward will be obtained from the hospital’s human resource department. Only nurses who resign or request for transfer to other wards due to stress and inability to cope when caring for the older people will be considered in the above count. The reasons for resigning or transferring will be asked from the nurses during the exit interview by the ward managers.
5.5 Intention to Treat
Intention to treat analysis is taken into consideration in this research. Data will be collected from all participants in the research regardless of their noncompliance or withdrawal at any point during the study. This is to prevent over optimistic estimates of the efficacy of the intervention, which is equipping the nurses with gerontological knowledge (Gupta,
