Some of the most disapproved items in the U.S. are gestation crates. Some argue gestation crates help, others disagree. Are gestation crates really necessary to our farming techniques? In factory farming, gestational crates are used on sows (female pigs) to stop movement as birth is given to piglets (baby pigs), making sows like prisoners, causing many major issues. Gestational crates do not belong in factory farming because gestation crates are inhumane to pigs, cause disapproval of companies, and cause bad medical conditions. Gestational crates are actually a repelling factor when wanting to export because the use of the crates creates the illusion that the people do not really care for the pigs, just for the meat that is given. It’s like saying “Forget about the pig, but remember to get the meat from it.” It doesn’t make sense. Companies that utilize gestation crates can lose plenty of money because now big-name food outlets now do not buy meat from those companies. McDonald’s points out that gestation crates are “not a sustainable production system for the future.” The Humane Society of the United States acknowledged that Costco, Oscar Mayer and food services Sodexo, ARAMARK, and Compass Group have stopped buying gestation crate pork. …show more content…
Reasons companies should not use gestation crates anymore are large food outlets do not buy meat from companies that use gestation crates, it causes bad medical conditions in pigs and humans alike, and most companies do not even use gestation crates anymore. Gestation crates do make farming easier, but it does not help the pig in any way.
