In Henry Wechsler’s article, “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking”, the Harvard School of Public Health informs us, that binge drinking is a major problem in colleges. Binge drinking has been a problem for decades, without much of focus on the matter. Henry stresses that social norms like sororities, fraternities, alumni tailgate parties, and athletes play an enormous role in attracting the norm on binge drinking and partying, that it’s been implanted a part of the social norm in colleges.
The author’s primary goal or purpose is to attack the matter by contributing several solutions to forestall binge drinking. His main thesis within the article is that the author presents causes and approaches to the behavior with binge drinking. The behavior has not declined, and showed very little change over the past four years throughout the research. He stated that 14,500 students have been surveyed at 116 institutions, and 43 percent reported that they binge drink at least once within two weeks compared to 44 percent within the earlier study. He stresses that 52 percent admitted that they drink, simply to get “drunk”, compare to the 39 percent within the earlier study.
