After reading detailed insights from the book Getting to Yes, I am now exposed to different strategies that I will inherent during each negotiation process. I have also made many connections to the specific points that author stated. The different styles of negotiating were interesting to review. In the book, I came across a point that described how a person should broaden their options during the negotiation process. Furthermore, each negotiator should be able to create unique ideas that would allow each person to build upon those thoughts. It is important for the participants to make room for discussion. I am aware that I tend to lack creativity and focus solely on the main goal. Furthermore, I do not make extra room for negotiating other possible options. The author’s point of view will help me with future negotiations because I will try to be more flexible with different solutions. The circle chart will allow me to diagnose the final solution and provide a better understanding of how to deal with tensions. As a result, both negotiators will potentially have an easier time coming to a final decision.
Communication is a skill that is necessary for each negotiator. The book explains how important it is to listen carefully to one another. Poor communication leads to feeling suspicious, unsympathetic, and confused. In general, I always enjoy listening to others and acknowledging what they are suggesting.. I appreciate when people reciprocate the action. I believe it shows respect and interest towards the other person. I tend to repeat their statements back to them because it proves to them I understood their aspects. Although I enjoy listening to other negotiators express their ideas, I need to practice composing solid proposals. My goal is to work on efficiently communicating the differences I might have with someone’s plan. The author also advises to talk about a problem in terms of the impact it would have on someone personally. I used this strategy in my last negotiation (Texoil).
