Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in 1485 in Greve in Chianti, Italy. He was italian. He then died in 1528 in Guadeloupe because of cannibalism. He was introduced to explore at any early age. He first went to Egypt and Syria two places that seemed mysterious. Sometime between 1507 and 1508 he went to France. He met King Francis I. He came in contact with some member of the French Navy, and started to understand some of the Navy's missions. He went through the Atlantic Coast of North America between the Carolinas and Newfoundland, including New York Harbor in 1524. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Verrazzano got four ships prepared with ammo, cannons, lifeboats, and scientific equipment. The four ships names were Delfina, Normanda, Santa Maria, and Vittoria. The Santa Maria and Vittoria were lost in a storm in the sea while the Normanda and Delfina were in a battle with spanish ships. At the end of it all only the people aboard of Delfina were alive and began to sail to the new world. After 50 days of being on the sea the men aboard Delfina sighted land thought to be near Cape Fear, North Carolina. Verrazzano first steered his ship south, but he came upon the tip of Florida, so then he turned and headed north. On April 17, 1524 the Delfina entered The Bay of New York. He landed on the southern tip of Manhattan, where he stayed until a storm sent him towards Martha´s Vineyard. He came to a stop at a place now known as Newport, Rhode Island.
