It is because of Christopher Columbus that we know more about how our world is and its history. Christopher Columbus had a huge impact in history and our lives today by sailing and learning more about our land. Some of Columbus biggest challenges were that everyone already had their minds set on how the Earth was and people didn’t agree his beliefs. Columbus had to find ways to sail across the ocean. He discovered things that he came across and accomplished things he set his mind to.

Columbus said “My goal is in the Indies and it would make no sense to waste time with offshore islands.” (Aaseng 24). Columbus and his crew had a very hard time getting ready for the voyage because they didn’t know how long it was going to take for them to arrive at their destination. They were trying to do something that had never been done before. Columbus used his calculations to try to estimate how long the trip was going to take. He did not tell his crew his true calculations because he was afraid that if he did and he was wrong, they were going to be discouraged. (Aaseng 25).
Columbus kept trying to find reasons to keep going. The sailing conditions kept getting worse but Columbus didn’t want to stop because his calculations showed he would be arriving to his destination soon. After sailing and sailing, Columbus knew his calculations were wrong and he needed to find a way to save his voyage. The only thing he could think to do was change his course.
