“To copy the truth can be a good thing, but to invent the truth is better, much better.” Giuseppe Verdi. This statement by Verdi I believe fits the concept of what romantic opera is quite nicely. Most everyone in this time period had this idea that romantic opera had to be full of the truth we couldn’t touch about our romantic feelings. This feeling had to be so deep that everyone started copying other people's feelings, maybe this was because they had never felt a love that passionate before. Or felt such an anger that violent themselves. However, Verdi showed in that quote that his opera was the purest of emotions, the deepest and most true. Some of his works such as the “Libiamo ne' lieti calici” made beautifully emotional songs. That song in particular was in La traviata which was a stunning opera; however, the song itself is a drinking song. Verdi was known for as his whimsical pieces of opera and heartfelt emotion. According to www.biography.com/people/giuseppe-verdi , Verdi grew up in Italy until he moved into the community of Le Roncole, near Busseto in the province of Parma, Italy. His family wasn’t made of money at all, in fact his mother was a spinner and his father a local in-keeper. This I believe greatly impacted the way he created his art in the musical world. Having parents from such humbling ends could only mean he has felt a humbling start himself. From watching youtube videos on different operas he’s written i’d say that I am correct. This man gave us a new sense of love and passion. I greatly admire his piece titled Oberto because though it was his first opera it was also the first sign of his remarkable talent.
