1.In your own words, state why it is important for social workers, or for anyone, to understand social welfare policy.

Anyone should understand social welfare policy because the more you know the more leverage you have. Hence, understanding the social welfare system will give you the ability to question, advocate for change, make good decisions about people’s lives including your own, and better plan for the future with prior knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of social programs.

It is more important for social workers to understand the social welfare policy because as a professional in the field of human services, having a greater understanding of social welfare policy can make them a better leader and a better source of information.

2.Give one example of where your tax dollars go to contribute to a social welfare program, and give an example of how you directly or indirectly benefit from a social welfare program. Do you have to be poor to benefit from a social welfare program? Explain.

Every time we get a paycheck, some taxes are withheld from it so that the government can pay to provide services. These social welfare benefits include the building and repairs of interstate highways and public parks which many uses such as myself. I do not believe only the poor benefit for social welfare programs as such earlier tax collected pays for interstate highways and public parks which the rich and poor use alike. In addition, tax collected by the government pay the fire fighters and police which the rich and poor rely on fire or police protection alike.

I chose question 2 because I thought it would be fun to explore how my tax dollar contributes to social welfare programs and how.

This carries on from the belief that Americans have long valued hard work and self-sufficiency. However, social responsibility is also valued. The idea of social responsibility meant people are responsible for each other and therefore society should care for all. This is shown through Americans supporting the values of helping those in need, contributing to charity, being socially caring, and participating as a citizen. These ideas affect ideas about social policy in how we see social responsibility through helping the lower class financially but we still have to pay for our own health insurance.
