In chapter 4 of Malcomb Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” discusses the Power of Context theory, also known as the Broken Window Theory. The basic argument of the theory is that crime is unavoidable if there is chaos unless there is some kind of small change in detail or approximate environment (Gladwell). That is, when a window has been broken for a while will make that building vulnerable for crime because it is perceived as no one is taking care of the broken window or the building but if the window is repaired or even shows signs of repair the building will not look like easy pickings for vandalism. According to them, being educated does not mean a diploma judges your level of intelligence. Although, it is argued that to be successful one must an educated person. I believe that to be educated, one must not give up in the learning process no matter the difficulty of it because education is involved in one’s success paths, but the way education is learned does not define the destined path to success.
Gladwell 's main argument is that although hard work and talent are essential for success, one’s given opportunities and cultural legacy are what really drive them to the pinnacle of success. The first aspect that Gladwell introduces to support his argument is the importance of opportunity. One example that he talks about is “The Matthew Effect”. “The Matthew Effect” is shown through the Medicine Hat Tigers elite hockey team of Canada; if one was to look at the roster, which includes their birth dates, they would find something quite peculiar.
