The motif I chose was Dystopia, I picked this because the story Scythe showed multiple examples of why it was dystopian. The book showed how the Scythes world was very unrealistic and showed lots of injustice to those who were gleaned because they could not get away, that was the rule made by the Scythes. In the beginning of Scythe, Rowan witnessed a “gleaning” he was then framed for being involved, even though he had actually tried to stop the gleaning. They were randomly chosen, and began going to the meetings and training as part of becoming a Scythe. “We are not the same beings we once were, so then, if we are no longer human what are we?” pg 91, This quote shows how Rowan is becoming a Scythe, and doesn't like how inhuman he feels. As part of being a Scythe, someone will begin to become different from everyone else, and start feeling less like a human, which is an example of being a dystopia, which had shown the book Scythe being unhumanized. “Never lose your humanity,” “or you'll be nothing more than a killing machine” pg 200, I picked this quote because it shows how someone might need to remember why you're doing what you're doing, and need to feel in control or someone might start to lose themselves. I picked this quote because Scythe Faraday had used the word killing instead of gleaning to show the impact of choosing the wrong people. I think this quote is important because Rowan is starting to grow numb, and Scythe Faraday was giving him some advice on how being a Scythe completely changes your view on life, and how unreal it starts to feel. The second part of the book showed how to feel in control, and have power over the people. In the last part of the book, it showed the theme not only of how the Scythes were
