The book Unwind by Neil Shusterman has many twists and turns with its complex characters. For example Risa, the main female protagonist displays many emotions and actions throughout the book. The author shows Risa’s characterization in an indirect way which I feel helps the reader get to know the character on a more understanding level. Two of those indirect characterizations really stood out to me; she was caring and adaptive in all situations. An act to show how adaptive Risa is, is when she was in front of the top five kids at the graveyard when she first arrived. While she was being assigned a job a boy came walking behind them with a bloody nose, and she jumped right into the action to help. “Lean forward, otherwise you’ll gag on your own blood,” Risa said calmly while helping the boy to stop the bleeding and get all cleaned up from the blood (201 Shusterman). Risa continues to show how adaptive she is throughout the book through her actions and speech. The quote shows how she stopped talking to the top five kids at the graveyard, possibly obtaining the worst job there yet still aid the boy to help clean himself up. …show more content…
We can also tell she is caring by how she acts towards Connor and Lev. For example when Risa is talking to Lev in relation to his sunburn or when he is talking to Risa regarding leaving for the Alaskan oil mining job. She is trying to talk him out of leaving for Alaska and confirm he is all right with his sunburn. For example when Risa asks, “What happened to you?” (201 Shusterman). This was related to Lev's sunburn and how Risa wanted to benefit him and get his burn under control. Another example is when Lev shouts, ”I told you it's nothing - What are you my mother” (234 Shusterman). This shows that she cares so much that Lev thinks she is acting like his mother. Both of these quotes show how she cares about the people she is
