At the beginning of the novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman, one of the main characters, Connor, is indirectly described as reckless. When Connor was younger, he had a bad experience with a storked baby (meaning a baby was left on his front porch). Hence, when he sees a similar-looking baby at a careless kid’s doorstep, Connor bolts straight for it. Shusterman writes, “He doesn’t know what he hoped to accomplish coming here” (Shusterman 63). Connor’s recklessness is then shown through these actions because when he runs for the door, it shows how quickly and impulsively he made that decision. In this world, there is a place called ‘the Graveyard’ and it’s essentially a sanctuary for unwinds (this is a kid under 18 that is going to get all their body parts taken away and given to other people, usually against their will). The Admiral is the person who runs the place. Eventually, he gets too out of shape to be in charge of it, so Connor takes his position. When new unwinds get to the Graveyard, Connor makes a speech about his plan for everything he is going to do about unwinding. During this speech, Connor says, “‘We will not be blowing up chop shops,’ he says. ‘We’re not going to feed into their image of us as violent kids who are better off unwound. We will think before we act–and that’s going to make it difficult for them…’”(Shusterman 333). Through his speech, Connor shows his thoughtfulness. Instead of making a reckless plan based on vengeance to violently infiltrate and destroy the places where kids are being unwound, he thinks through the situation and decides to make a more peaceful approach that will provide a much more desirable result; one that doesn’t end up making things worse and filling the outside world with fear.
