The proverb, “He who is being carried does not realize how far the town is.” is a popular saying in Nigeria. The proverb means that if a person has advantages that another does not then they will not realize how hard it is until they have to do it themselves. This quote fits into society today because many people do not realize how hard another person's life is until you have been in the same situation. This quote can be related to many things in our lives today including famous people, works of literature, and even current events. One famous person who lives by this quote is the famous South African entrepreneur Elon Musk. This can be shown because Musk started from the bottom. This quote demonstrates, that Musk lives by this quote because he has actually been in the situation of people who do not have the things in life that he now has.This is because he grew up poor in South Africa and had to work himself to the position that he is in now. He also lives by the proverb because he overcame challenges in his life to become a widely known entrepreneur. For example , later, in the book Kallen states that, “In 2015, at the age of forty-four, Musk was worth an estimated 12 billion.”(Kallen 8). This validates that he lives by the proverb because, after being at rock bottom in his life, he overcame his challenges to eventually become a multi-billionaire. He remembers when he was struggling in life and this inspires him to want to help others. For example, in Lebron James by Christopher Rager, Rager writes, “LeBron Raymone James preserved through a childhood in which he had little contact with his biological father, Anthony Mclelland.” (Rager 1). This quote verifies that James lives by the proverb, because he grew up in a poor community. Also, James started from the bottom, not even knowing his own father, and now he is a well known athlete around the world. Furthermore, LeBron lives by the proverb because of his childhood.
