The betrayal; the cut that always bleeds. It goes beyond the surface; damaging relationships and destroying the trust between loved ones. This is explored in Neal Shusterman's novel Unwind. In the story he explores the deception of those in which were once trusted, and the repercussions their actions have on the characters. Risa grew up as a ward of the state she had watched people come and go, abused and lonely. This is an especially prevalent issue in the beginning of the story. This was demonstrated when she and Conner got into a small “fight” ( which proved to be only a trick to see if Lev would run.) Though this all goes down the drain when pinned in the bathroom by Roland. this was the moment in which all the trust she spent on Conner would be cashed in. But to her dismay; nothing. Conner had no reaction . filled with rage she had trusted him after years of not relying on anyone. It's later revealed that conner had actually taken Risa's words to heart and trusted her. Throughout the book, Risa preaches to Conner to think things through. This time Conner had faith in Risa and considered her theories, but in her eyes this was the backstab of a lifetime.
