Private Jupiter Sharts is a character from the movie Glory. He's a former slave who joins the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first all-black regiment in the Union Army. Jupiter is a brave and determined soldier who fights for his freedom and the freedom of all black people. He's a loyal friend and is always looking out for the other soldiers. Jupiter is a skilled soldier who quickly earns the respect of his fellow men.

Glory tells the story of the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. This was the first military unit made up of black troops organized in the North by the Union government (“54th Regiment”). Commanded by Colonel Shaw, they led the assault against Fort Wagner on Morris Island (“The 54th”). They suffered heavy losses; almost half of their members were killed, wounded, or captured (“The 54th”).

In the battle scene, the 54th is pinned down and taking massive amounts of enemy fire, and yet none of the soldiers are making any sort of move to fight back. Their comrades are dying all around them, but the men simply lie there in the sand covering their heads. Thus it falls to Colonel Robert Shaw to be the beacon of courage for his men in order to lead them to glory. While the movie is undoubtedly about the struggles of the African American men of the 54th, it cannot be overlooked that at every turn they require guidance and mercy from their benevolent white colonel. It would be unrealistic for a company of African American men to accomplish what they did in the Civil War without Shaw’s help, but it is still worth noting that in some ways this feels largely like movies where the white man comes to save the savages (e.g. Dances With Wolves, Avatar, The Last Samurai).
This is were Glory begins the movie depicts the story through Shaw’s eyes from the battle of Antietam where Shaw is dumb founded by the horror of war, now this is a tad bit of a history let off because he would have already seen combat casualties in the 1st battle of Winchester where there were huge casualties
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Gould Shaw was an American soldier and the first to command an all-African American regiment. during this time in society, discrimination was huge. What Robert was doing was unbelievable at that time and during situations he also saw them as untouchables yet it took the attack on Fort Wagner for Robert to awaken and see these soldiers as equalities willing to fight for this country. Robert never got the chance to express what happen that day to the public, but he took it to his grave and died in battle. In Glory, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was harsh to the black troops like Mr. Epps from 12 Years a Slave. But, Shaw cared for the troops and was much less harsh than Mr. Epps. Two similar characters are Solomon Northrup and Sergeant Major John Rawlins. Both are very intelligent, brave and experienced slavery. Private Trip and Mr. Epps are also both angry people and treat others poorly.
In the beginning of the film, the young Lt. Colonel Moore (played by Mel Gibson), Mel Gibson showed great acting as playing the role of a Lt. Colonel Moore. He really got into character by showing a great role mode of leadership, when Lt. Colonel was preparing his men for the upcoming battle. Gibson’s character Lt. Colonel Moore lived by every single Army value by heart. One Army value that his character obeyed by was Selfless Service. Selfless Service meant that it was important to come together and work as a team.
The first “battle” they took part in was not a battle at all. They took part in the destruction of the town of Darien, Georgia. It was a town that had no military guarding it, and was simple to destroy, but there was no good reason for the men to waste their time destroying such an unimportant town. This frustrated Shaw immensely, because he wanted his soldiers to fight for freedom and justice, not to destroy towns that had no significance in the outcome of the war. He felt that once again his troops were being treated unfairly because of their color.
