1) What is the title of the Movie? Who directed it? Is it based on a book? If so tell me more. If not, who wrote it? What is the setting? (time and place)
The title of the movie I watched is Glory. The movie Glory is based on a book. Well actually it is based on a screenplay written by Kevin Jarre. Edward Zwick directed the movie an it was produced by Freddie Fields.
2) Give an overview of the time and place. In other words, if it takes place in the Civil War, explain a little bit about the Civil War.
Glory tells the story of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, the “trial balloon” for black soldiers. The regiment was comprised entirely of African Americans. Some of these people were ex-slaves, willing to fight for the North. At first the army intended to just use them only for manual labor, but as the war got started some seen combat. Although it was widely believed that blacks would not make good soldiers, the 54th was one of the bloodiest actions of the war. In fact, nearly 200,000 fought for the North, and at one point the South issued a declaration that any black man taken as a prisoner would be executed. Most of the main events that are shown in the film actually happened. The first half of Glory follows the massachusetts 54th as they undergo the training which is brutal. There are times where Shaw seems out of his depth, such as when Trip publicly flogged for desertion ( standard punishment for the act). During the film's second hour, the regiment goes on active duty. At first, they perform a series of menial tasks, such as burning down an unprotected town. Eventually, Shaw convinces the army to use the Massachusetts 54th in combat and after winning a skirmish, they become the vanguard for an attack on the impregnable Fort
