What are the emotions of the person? Emotions are states of mind that appear in specific circumstances. Emotions could be anger, which appears when something infuriates people, or joy, which emerges when people feel pleasure. In Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Martin’s character is negative because he is fearful and hostile. First, Martin is very fearful. For example, while Casiopea is meeting Martin on the Black Road she says he looks haunted by the black road “His face was parched, not a physical thirst but a spiritual one. He looked haunted.” (308). This proves that he is fearful because Casiopea is still persevering through the Black Road, and Martin is already spooked and tired. This shows that he is fearful because he wants to quit the game and instead of admitting defeat he decides to ask Casiopea to quit. Also, Martin is extremely hostile. For instance, Casiopea manages to get away from Martin after he tries to make her talk to Vucub Kame, and he kicks a beggar’s sign (141). This shows how hostile he is because he kicks a random person's sign after not getting his way. Another example is when Casiopea and Martin are arguing, he says that she’ll polish his shoes for the rest of her life “Don’t shine my shoes today, you’ll have plenty of chances to polish them every day, for the rest of your life.” (17). This proves that he is hostile because he expects his cousin to work for him for the rest of her life, even if she doesn't want to do that. A final instance is when Martin tells Casiopea to run an errand for him, she thinks that he will hit her if she does not listen (5). In Gods of Jade and Shadow, Martin’s negative emotions are anxiety and aggressiveness. One of Martin’s negative traits is being fearful because he is scared of the Black Road.
