In the article titled Face-off on the playing field By, Judith B. Stamper explains girls have their own story of support or discrimination, success also the debate of girls be allowed to compete on boys’ sports team. First, the writer Title IX explains female athletes are been treated second-class for long enough and should pass of inequalities and biases of girls. The writer also clarifies that girls doing sports make them healthier, physically, and emotionally. Other girls that don’t play sports are less likely to use of drugs. In addition, she notes a former Stanford University basketball player Mariah says, strength and independence of things girls learn from sports, the opportunities that are changing women.
One of my first question is why does the team not want to accept the girl for who she is and how great of a basketball player she really is. I don’t get why they have to look at her like she’s the one that’s holding the team back when she’s one of the better players on the team. That is just one of my many questions I have about the basketballs team. My second question is why does the coach have to gibe at the team and, also have to be so up tight about every thing that happens on the court. “F*** it ill tell her she not coming when we get there” (Lupica 41).
Throughout the history of sports there have been many great rivalries. Whether it’s Frazier vs. Ali or Bird vs. Magic these battles of superiority have forever left their mark on history. Sadly, it seems that these types of marquee matchups are a thing of the past. Star athletes are now choosing to team up with one another as a way of escaping head to head matchups so that they can enjoy an easier path to a championship. That being said, I believe that the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of one the biggest rivalries in NBA history.
One reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports are identical to men’s sports. For example some people think that women aren’t good enough to get paid more because men are faster, stronger, and more athletic (www.cnn.com.girls basketball). Women have all of those qualities. Some WNBA players can even dunk.
Even though the WNBA is not as popular as the NBA does not mean that the WNBA players should be paid as little as they do. Forbes.com stated that “In 2017 the total amount of salary for WNBA players was $11,775,000 this means that the WNBA paid no more than 22.8% of its revenue to its players.) Two years ago, the same approach was used to estimate that the WNBA players were receiving only 33% of league revenue. So it appears the gender wage gap in professional basketball is worsening”. This is estimated but it is most likely accurate if this is anywhere close the what the WNBA players are making then this is terrible.
Ever since its debut by gym teacher Dr. James Naismith in 1891 basketball has become a widely popularized team sport for both men and women across the nation. Though enjoyed by both men and women, women have struggled to attain the same respect in the sport as men, even though the women at the University of California had their first extramural game in 1892. The same trend continues in the NBA, National Basketball Association, and WNBA, Women’s National Basketball. The NBA started 70 years ago in 1946 while the WNBA began 20 years ago in 1996. The NBA continues to gain popularity, while the WNBA struggles to still be known.
Since the NBA is more known than the WNBA they get more fans, sponsors, and exposure. It is tough for the WNBA to get out there, sure some people know it exists but most do not pay attention to it. Lisa Leslie, a WNBA star, stated “It would be nice getting more fans to support the WNBA and more women supporting women in sports” (Martin). “The Princeton women 's basketball team did something no other Ivy League men 's team had done before, racking up 30 wins and zero losses. The Princeton team garnered national headlines, which was great, but I still wondered what it was going to take for women 's sports to get the same attention as men 's sports” said Kelly Wallace the author of this article.
(Gerencer). Women in the WNBA work everyday to prove that they can be just as skilled as NBA players are, and that they deserve to paid a decent amount. Yet, they do not get the credit for their skills because they are considered to be boring to most people. These women deserve a paycheck that matches their abilities and efforts, not opinions on them. Thus, women who play professional basketball should have an increase in the amount they are paid because they do not get enough money despite their abilities, and the fact that they are playing at a professional
This tradition seems to be secluded when it comes to women’s events, collegiate basketball for example. Most sports fans overlook the magic that happens behind the scenes of a woman 's game. The same beloved magic
This is why the admission of women has changed the Olympic games
They have grown up with the ideas that, if someone is a woman she cannot train a man or do a man's job. The NFL has just made a difference in sports today with the first female assistant coach, yet there have been negative comments about that decision. Female athletes get vulgar tweets and other comments sent to them every day. It is extremely rare that a female athlete is held to the same standards as a male athlete. Delle Donne has proved that a female is just as great as a man, her free throw record is 95% while a male basketball player Steph Carry is only 90%.
The Miami Heat is a team in the eastern conference. They were founded in 1988. They play at American Airlines Arena. The head coach is Erik Spolestra, the manager is Pat Riley, and the owner is Micky Arison. The heat have won 3 championships in 2006, 2012, 2013.
Sexism has shaped the Olympics for years. 2016 Olympic games were an amazing time for women and their Olympic achievements, but media depicted their achievements differently. Vox’s video titled Sexist coverage steals the show at 2016 Olympics depicts the sexist comments and articles written by male reporters in the 2016 Rio Olympics. From the devaluation of the female tennis Olympic player Eugenie Bouchard to whom the reporter, Adam Kreek claimed was not taking her career seriously as she was more focused on her self-image by posting “selfies” holding a toothpaste tube and “trying on different hairstyles,” to the comment made to the 2016 U.S. gymnastic team when gathered around talking before the competitions by a commentator saying that “they might as well be standing in the middle of a mall” in reference to the stereotype that young females stand around in groups at the mall (Vox “Sexist coverage steals the show at 2016 Olympics “).
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
There's still discrimination because men love to show off how big they are or how much they can lift, making women feel like they are not good enough to be on the team. Even though women's sports have grown over the past decades, women’s sporting events have not grown more popular, media coverage of female athletes is not up to date. Three decades later they finally realize that women sporting channels are harder to find, and the presens on female athletes on tv are low, lower than they were back in the day. LA local networks affiliates dedicated about five percent of their coverage to women's sports in 1989, in 2014 the percentage had dropped 3.2 percent and because they took more time to focus on the women sports it was better then than it is now. Even though the participation of girl sports has increased, the commercials and highlight shows have made the girls look weak and the people interested in wanting to come and watch them play.
