Good and Evil: How It is Represented in Certain Cinderella Tales It starts with “Once upon a time…” and ends with “...and they lived happily ever after,” which may make any story seem like a far off fairy tale but these stories are much more relatable than some may think. The people in fairy tales overcome obstacles that are set up by the inherently good and evil nature of the main character and the characters around him or her. The way good and evil are portrayed can be a caricature of what the characters, situations, and obstacles represent in real life. Both the good and evil traits in characters range from completely pure to as flawed as we think ourselves being, if not more so. Although there are no stepsisters in this particular version, it is made up for by the other people working on the farm who “ridiculed, attacked, and mocked her all the time” (Perrault 112). People can be cruel to someone who is an outsider, different, or not good enough for them. It is a selfish amusement fulfilled by bringing someone else down to lift yourself up above them. On the other side of that, we see something not always portrayed in Cinderella stories: A prince who finds her and comes to love her for not only her outer beauty, but inner beauty as well. The princess had already thought him to be quite the catch and knew she could deserve him if he was not already taken so when the next series of events happened she knew what she wanted and what she was going to do. After seeing her in her dress by chance while she was in her room, the prince saw how beautiful she was. She had a gorgeous dress and a lovely face, “But most of all, his heart was captured by a wise and modest reserve that bore witness to the beauty of her soul” (Perrault 113). He asks about her and who she is; he hears of Donkeyskin and wants only her if it is the same woman he saw. Everyone tells him that she is far too ugly to be given a chance, but he insists. In the end Donkeyskin uses her wits to help the prince finally find her and live happily ever after with
