Did you ever wonder how our amazing hot air balloons came to be one summer day. Or maybe you were tying your shoes and wondered why right and left shoes are slightly different. There is only one clear answer: The Civil War. Now you maybe flashing back to the History channel on your remote at this point, but the Civil war isn’t just some documentary on TV. It's a war that affected all of America, bringing many effects both good and bad. On a large scale these impacts have shaped our free country. But if we take it to a personal scale, why would these matter to us?
First, one thing we need to know is what was the Civil War. This war began in 1861 to 1865, lasting four years. It was one of the most bloodiest wars in America having 620,000 killed (40,000 were African Americans). The best reason why this war started wasn’t mainly because of the slaves as your parents may have told you. For example, new amendments were established. The thirteenth amendment, established in 1865, banned slavery. While the fifteenth allowed all men (not woman yet), no matter what race, to vote. Another good impact, was the First Transcontinental Railroad. This railroad was formed not too long after the Civil War and was mostly built by Chinese workers. It stretched across the east to the west of the United States, allowing people to travel faster on train than on foot or horseback. Other effects were home-delivered mail, the idea of an actual mansion as a hospital instead of a home, canned food, different shaped shoes for the left and right feet, submarines, hot air balloons, and land mines.
