Author’s show the Hero’s Journey in many different and similar ways. In The Hobbit wrote by JRR Tolkien the Hero Bilbo Baggins leaves his home to go on a adventure with the dwarves’. They run into goblins, elves’, and spiders and are heading to Smaug to fight a dragon to get their gold back. In A Dog’s Life wrote by Ann M Martin the Hero Squirrel leaves her home to follow her brother and runs into another home. The person of the home drives them and drops them off at the mall; Squirrel loses her brother named Bone and is left in the mall to find food and shelter.
Many authors such as, J.R.R Tolkien, use their writing to get entertain, inform, or persuade. While writing the author may put their own opinions in a book or novel. By including a character with certain traits they believe to be viewed in a positive light or they may include a character that has traits they view in a negative light. Tolkien also shows two sides he feels may be needed for a journey like this,physical strength and intelligence. Intelligence is more important and Tolkien shows what he feels is positive through Bilbo the main character and negative through Bilbo’s enemies.
The company faces many challenges while Gandalf aids them. Eventually, Bilbo becomes forced to take charge and lead the company to the mountain. The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
In the story, The Hobbit, Thorin is in charge of a group of 13 dwarves. Thorin is a powerful, tough, and intelligent leader. Throughout the book, Thorin likes to go to other people to help him make decisions and help the other dwarves win their mission. On this mission, they are trying to gain their treasure back from the stealing, thief, Smaug the dragon. The whole situation brings up lots thinking if Thorin is actually a good leader in being in charge of the dwarves, helping them get back their treasure.
Literary Critique The Hobbit is a book made by J.R.R TOLKIEN and published in 1980.What happens in this book is the main character Bilbo Baggins a hobbit goes on a very dangerous mission with one wizard named Gandalf and thirteen dwarves. Their destination is a mountain full of dwarf mined gold with a dragon in it. I thought the book was pretty good very well described in detail,but overall it was a good book. My favorite character in the story was Gollum, he is a psycho troll like creature that loves one thing in the world “his precious aka his ring” and I find that really funny.

Morgoth, the original evil, that came to exist before the creation of Middle-earth and Sauron, Morgoth’s faithful lieutenant which became the second dark lord after the imprisonment of his master. Morgoth reigned as the first dark lord during the first age of the world. The first age ended with his defeat.
Back then perspectives were very different, so the response to J.R.R. Tolkien’s book back then would have been very different in comparison to it were to be released tomorrow. If The Hobbit was released today, written the exact same way, it would get a lot more hate and judgement to have whole races categorized as the bad guys. Tolkien’s book does not include enough diversity in personalities within any race to get by in today’s sensitive and judgemental society. Another controversial segment in the book was the physical and mental separation between all the different creatures. The typical creature in the book would live with their race days away from any other races, isolated to their own kind.
Isaac Watts once said, "Learning to trust is one of life's most difficult tasks. " Trust plays a significant role in The Hobbit because the dwarves and Bilbo have to learn to trust each other on the quest, the dwarves have to trust Gandalf, and Beorn has to trust Gandalf. When the dwarves found out that Bilbo was going to be their burglar they were skeptical.
Hero’s Journey Essay Literary Analysis of The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien What happens when one day a cloaked figure asks you to join a group of heavily bearded men in search for treasure in a dragon’s lair? Bilbo is fortunate enough to experience such a peculiar invitation, but the Baggins side of him is quick in refusal. Yet off he still goes from his warm and fuzzy hobbit hole in the Shire to the desolate land of Dain, where he learns to prove his worth amongst his hot-tempered Dwarf companions. Along the way, allies are made, secrets kept and human desires put into play, eventually culminating in the concluding battles where Bilbo plays a pivotal role in the management of order in the fellowship.
This is best seen through the character Radagast. In the novel, Radagast is mentioned about once, when the wizard Gandalf says, “...perhaps you have heard of my good cousin Radagast who lives near the Southern borders of Mirkwood” (pg. 119). Radagast plays no major roles in the novel, yet the movie changes this completely. In the motion picture The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Radagast is not only a character in the movie with quotes and actions but is also involved in aiding the protagonists. Although critics generally frown upon characters and events not derived from the source material, the more important issue is that these clips rarely, if ever, advance the story nor the protagonists.
I heard once from my high school English teacher that, “the conflict of good and evil is at the heart of all great stories, it's only some that offer insight”. This sparked my curiosity and interest leading me to conclude that we spend the majority of our life learning right from wrong as if it is as simple as black and white. We believe heroes and villains are easily distinguishable, but what if it wasn’t so black and white? What if we got the villains mixed up? J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, the novel takes place in the Second World War, when evil was at an all-time high.
Throughout The Hobbit, there have been many conflicts some of the external conflicts include “The Battle of Five Armies”, the riddles in the dark, and the Dragon Smaug. Some of the internal conflicts include Bilbo’s loyalty, Thorin's greed, and the Dwarves' honor. The Battle of Five Armies was the climax of this novel, in which the Dwarves, Men, Elves, and Eagles fight against the Goblins and Wargs(the evil wolves). The battle is sparked by the Dwarves' desire to reclaim their homeland, which is fiercely contested by the Goblins, who see it as their rightful inheritance, because of their history and how it conflicts harshly with each other.
