Frankenstein S.A. By: Alex Hinman Gothic novels focus on the mysterious and supernatural. In Frankenstein, Shelley uses rather mysterious circumstances to have Victor Frankenstein create the monster: the cloudy circumstances under which Victor gathers body parts for his experiments and the use of little known modern technologies for unnatural purposes. He gathered these body parts to build the monster from a graveyard nearby. He went out and dug up graves to steal body parts to make this amalgamation of limbs to create this monster. I would say victor is rather neutral but more towards the evil side. For building the monster and robbing graves. Then there is Gloom, mystery, and curiosity like during the story frankenstein is watching a family go about their daily lives and what they do and how they work and speak and act. Which I thought was a very interesting part of the story he even stole their food for a little while at least until he witnessed how wrong that really was. He then decided to go and cut wood for them and leave at their front door as well as stop taking their food from them. He even learned some of their speech. But in a really dark way he spying stealing and learning from these people. Next I will talk about the castle that the monster was created in and this relates to the theme of the story because of what it is. A creepy dark and evil castle where life is given to the unholy monstrosity. Over all the gothic is more focused towards the supernatural then the grotesk and disturbing. The story focuses more on giving life to the creature some “supernatural” methods.
