The story of American Religion is one of migration, be it from immigrants from other countries or from the movement of Americans from city to city and from state to state. This is especially true of American Southerners who, during the Great Depression, moved out of their homeland and to the more industrial areas of the country like Detroit or Los Angeles. When these Southerners migrated to Los Angeles and Southern California, they brought with them their evangelical religious beliefs. In “From Bible Belt to Sun Belt,” author Darren Dochuk describes how that brand of southern evangelicalism initially shaped Southern California, and then US politics as a whole, through cultural clashes with the existing New Deal Democrats of the area, by

Perhaps, the most frightening aspect of this book is the ever-darkening depravity of American culture. Honestly, if a reader traces the opponents of fundamentalism through the work, they find a disturbing trend that explains why America is facing the problems she’s facing today. Slowly but surely, those who hold to fundamentalism are becoming fewer in number. Now, most well-educated people would not know what fundamentalism is or (more importantly) what it stands for. Small wonder America is going to Hell in a handbasket (pardon my
In “Maus,”Art Spiegelman tasks himself with sharing the most accurate retelling of his father’s life story as well as that of he and his father. To achieve a most accurate depiction of he, his father, and their emotions throughout the novel, Spiegelman uses characters Anja and Mala. Both having been married to Vladek, Art’s father, give insight to Vladek, and impart the impression that no matter how stereotypical Vladek’s traits are, the traits unique to him. As Art’s mother, Anja also serves particular purpose in developing a fuller picture of his character. Both Anja and Mala also serve as agitating conflict between the nostalgic, hopeful past and the stressful present for Vladek while drawing a parallel of similar feelings between Art and his lost brother, Richieu. The two women are entry-points for the emotions of Art, Vladek, and

Difficulties as a Christian We live on a very diverse continent that all began during the early settlements (15 – 50BC). This early settlement began with the Bering straight, this brought over early migrants with completely different cultures to establish land in the western hemisphere. New England was settled by stable families and supported by agriculture; they had a healthier climate and a stronger religious government. However after the land was starting to be established during the 1620’s religious disputes started to establish between the puritans, separatists, Anglicans, and Christians. While most studies and theories are concerned with the differences between religion and culture, Bellah (1967) spent a lot of time examining the similarities of religion specifically in America. While Rousseau is credited as the one who coined the term “civil religion”, Bellah provided an in-depth study (2007:167). Based in presidential inaugurations, he continuously recites that people in authority often cite a generalized god, one that does not belong to any set religion (Bellah 1967). He goes on to explain that in America, there are “certain common elements of religious orientation that the great majority of Americans share” (Bellah 1967:166). This is important to understand in the sociology of religion because it shows how cultures and ideas can combine to create something the majority of society agrees on, even if it’s something as strongly held as
The founding fathers acknowledged man’s sinful nature, and made laws and rules based on the Word of God with consequences to keep it. Our nation’s government is based on and influenced by many different types of government: Democracy, Republic, and Federalism. But most importantly it’s based on the Bible. Today, Americans forget and care less and less about their heritage and what this nation was founded upon.
