Graduation Speech: A Hero's Journey

The train is on it’s way to the Dalles, we just left Whitman Mission about three days ago. John Adams has said that there are two ways to finish off the trip. WE can either float down on the Dalles or was can go around Mt. Hood on Barlow Road. I’m sure this decision will cause more controversy within the group.

Today we reached the Dalles and decided to stop for lunch. During lunch John tell us we need to decide what route we are going to take, The Dalles or Barlow Road. John tells us he wants to take Barlow Road around Mt. Hood, but the Eller’s say they want to float down the Dalles. John and Roger got into a fight trying to convince the others what way to take. If we go on Barlow Road we will only be able to travel one wagon at a time and the road is so steep we will need to go extra slow when on it, …show more content…

The train arrived at the beginning of Barlow Road. We came across a teller man, the price he gave me to pay was $3.25. I only had $1.75 left from buying extra beef from camp Boise. We had some medicine left over from the trip, I offered the man $1 and the medicine for the toll. The man didn’t want to accept this offer so I also offered Whisky along with the medicine, this time he agreed.

About two days after we began on Barlow Road things started to get difficult. When we were going around Mt. Hood the road got very steep. We were pulling up Pat’s wagon with some rope when the rope snapped. Pat’s wagon slid down at least fifty feet before we could stop it. Luckily no one was injured when this happened.

We finally made it. We just got off Barlow Road and arrived in Oregon City. Now that we are finally in Oregon I 've had a chance to look back on the trip. Overall the trip was hard but I’m glad we went. We can all have a fresh start now that we are in Oregon. I plan on making medicine again after we settle down. I will help those that are just getting off the trail and I hope to stay near my new friends from the
