Congratulations to all of our graduates. You’re officially ‘Sandburg Survivors’. But what does that really mean? Today, you will have the honor of leaving with a certificate in your hand, and a little pride in your heart. You will leave feeling, hopefully at least a little good about yourself, but how will everyone else feel? Do you think that your peer sitting next to you is glad or proud to see you in your cap and gown? Believe it or not, you’ve left an impression on almost every teacher and classmate at Sandburg, but it was up to you to decide what that impression was going to be. And so I ask you, what is your impact? Look to your left. Now, look to your right. Most likely you recognize these people. You’ve noticed them before. They’ve made an impact on you. Whether they’re your best friend, your arch nemesis, or just someone you’ve waved to in the hall before, it doesn’t really matter. You most likely have a memory of this person. Even though it’s cliché, the phrase that states “this is only the beginning” could never be more accurate. This is an experience that is going to take time to wrap our heads around but what we’re doing right now is so much more than academics and effort. What we do right now will soon be history, but also defines our future. J.K. Rowling said, “One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.” She had come to the brilliant realization that she had the amazing power to change the world and that started inside of herself, so she used that power to paint our world that with the color of her
