In the movie "Gran Torino" the main character Walt lives next door to Vietnamese neighbors. In the movie the character Walt is very racist he refers to his neighbors as chinks and make other statements that are very disrespectful. Walt has alienated himself from his children and it appears that he thinks they are spoiled.It appears that Walt's racism stems from when he fought during the Korean War . During the war Walt was most likely taught to hate the people he was at war with, however it appears Walt hates himself for what he did to the people involved in the war.Within the Hmong culture it appears in the film that family play a big role within their culture and in the beginning of the movie they all gathered together to bring food to celebrate and bless a newborn baby. Walt's home is clean and well put together and he has a nice car in his driveway. In addition, Walt's neighbors did not have a car in their driveway no man of the house and their house was falling apart. Walt encounters his neighbor Thao when he tries to steal his Gran Torino as a part of a gang initiation. After Thao's mother find out that what he had done she begs Walt to let him do odd jobs for him for a week to pay Walt back for what he had done. It appears that within the Hmong culture you have to work for forgiveness from another person.Within the movie it appears that Hmong people believe that a mans role is to be the head of the house. In the household during a family event a elderly woman made a comment that another major character in the movie Thao was washing dishes and the comment made was that he will never be respected as a man of the house because he lets his sister boss him around and he does household chores. When Walt defends his neighbor Thao against his cousin that's in a gang and from that point the Hmong people in the neighborhood really praised Walt and gave him presents to thank
