The tragedy of the commons was a problem years ago, and still is a problem today. The tragedy is where every individual attempt to benefit from every resource they can. As the demand for resource overwhelms the supply, every individual who consumes an additional unit directly harms others who can no longer enjoy the benefits. The interest of the resource is easily available to all individuals. The tragedy occurs when some individuals neglect the safety of society in the pursuit of their own personal gain. The cod of Grand Banks faced a situation where some individuals took more resources than they needed. Which put the rest of the cod of Grand Banks at serious risk of extinction. Currently in today’s time, there are several cases where this tragedy still takes place. One example of this is the Bluefin tuna population in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea face similar issues as the Cod. …show more content…

A conservation group was formed to help with this situation and situations like it around the world. The group is called the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT). They try to keep the population of the fish and the supply of the fish at a good level and try to keep them from going extinct. Another instance that hasn’t become an issue yet but easily could within the next twenty years is crab fishing. Fisherman fish all year long to catch as much crab as they can. Crab fishing is mainly done around Alaska and around oceans with a colder climate. If the fisherman catch to many crabs and make them go extinct it will be horrible because I love crab and I wouldn’t want to not be able to eat it
