In Jon Hassler’s Grand Opening Grandpa is a great character to show us through his actions that age does not have to be ugly, weak, or burdensome; aging can be delightful, interesting and wise.

Grandpa is the most lazy character in Grand Opening, this benefit comes from his age. “ ‘....Now you’ll excuse me, lad, it's time for my nap.’ He left the table and went to the couch in the living room.” (210) The most significant reason for Grandpa’s napping during the day is it helps him through his daily activities. Grandpa's napping also keeps him out of the fun mischief he normally finds, such as the incident when grandpa walked off and boarded a train bound for a neighboring town. Most would love to sleep the day away as to miss boring activities and because they enjoy sleeping. This is the third reason for Grandpa’s napping. …show more content…

It would seem people today try to live a blissful life and some have deemed them “The Uninformed American”. These people try to lead a life that doesn’t interact with what’s happening around them so that they are not worried and ignorant deeming the saying “ignorance is bliss” correct for these “Uninformed American[s]”.
