The poem and folktale The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson and Abuelito Who are similar and different in plenty of ways. The main character is a grandfather who is mistreated by his son and daughter-in-law. He is made to eat in a corner, by the stove, and out of a wooden bowl. The grandson was playing and building a wooden dish for his parents to eat out of when they grow up. “The young peasant and his wife looked at each other, and tears filled their eyes. They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly, and from that day they again let the old man eat with them at the table and took better care of him” (Tolstoy, 18-21). The grandfather is elderly and sick and the parents were changed by the kid who showed he loved his grandfather by showing the parent the way that they treated the grandfather.
