The main theme of The Great Gatsby is The Decline of the American Dream in the 1920’s. Although The Great Gatsby takes place in Long Island, New York, the story represents America as a whole. F. Scott Fitzgerald shows the era weakening by the lack of morals shown through greed, reckless jubilance, and fraud. The American Dream was meant to be about discovery, individualism, and pursuit of happiness but it was corrupted. For instance, Gatsby resulted to crime to earn money to impress Daisy. I think one of the biggest universal appeals in The Great Gatsby is the money factor. Gatsby has a lot of money and fame and is always throwing extravagant parties, but nobody was a real friend.
