The colossal man-made Great Pyramids of Giza are some of the most magnificent structures in history. The pyramids were built during a time when Egypt was one of the wealthiest and most powerful civilizations in the world. Pyramids were built from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Ptolemaic period in the fourth century A.D. However, the peak of pyramid building started with the late third dynasty and continued until about the sixth dynasty. Over 4,000 years later the Egyptian pyramids remain in a magnificent state and still hold much of their glory. The kings had great power over Egypt because the Egyptians considered them in between a human and a god. The kings were believed to have been chosen by the gods themselves to serve as almost a messenger between the Egyptians and the gods. The first known pyramid built in Egypt was built around 2630 B.C. for King Djoser of the third dynasty. Even this pyramid was nothing compared to the future ones to come. This eventually developed into stepped pyramids which became the norm for royal burials.
Now on to the most well known pyramids worldwide these are the Great Pyramids of Giza. These pyramids are located on a plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, which is on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. The oldest and largest pyramid was built for Khufu, the successor of Sneferu, the second of the eight kings of the fourth dynasty. Khufu reigned for 23 years however relatively little is known of his reign besides the construction of his pyramid.
