Greed or covetousness, is very similar to gluttony, but it covers a more eclectic range of things. People may be greedy for possessions, money, fame, etc. While this may lead to success for some, it can take away from their overall happiness. Greed can drive people to do well, but it ultimately can consume their lives at a quick rate. However, greed can teach us that materials do not necessarily dictate happiness. Many times people are chasing material possessions so intensely that they begin to lose sight of other aspects of their lives such as; friends, families, leisure time, etc. This concept is one that media has commercialized many times over and over. All sins that are committed can be derived from one of the seven, but from all of these sins there is a positive aspect to learn from. While these sins harm us or others, turning from them and learning from them enrich people’s lives. It teaches people how to improve their quality of life, what to appreciate, and even to appreciate themselves. As stated earlier, without negatives one cannot see the positives in life. Sins are the negatives that are there to lead us and motivate us towards the positive. While sins do lead to individual growth from the consequences, collectively, people have come together to learn and turn away from sin. This can be seen in things such as support groups, charities, and awareness campaigns. Organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, etc. utilize the experience of others who have graduated from the life of sin to assist those still trapped. Sin shows people to appreciate what they have, but also allows them to recognize that there are those with less or those who need help, which leads to people coming together to help improve the quality of life of others, as well as their own . There would be no one seeking to improve anything, or motivation for some to do more with their talents and passions. This would lead all things to be ordinary and mediocre. Without sin, people would not appreciate the extraordinary. Without sin, people would not appreciate their spiritual relationship with God. Many people who claim to have a strong relationship with God are those who turned away from him, yet found their way back to the right path. Religious people often strive to be close to God, and contrary to popular belief, sin facilitates this relationship. In a more secular example, when a child disobeys their parent and suffers from their decision, they grow closer when their parent forgives them and mends that bond. Sins create a standard of right and wrong, they allow people to dictate their own lives and how they decide to live. If sin did not exist, that also means that it would take away a sense of free will. If sin did not exist people would be forced to be “good,” which would also take away from the importance of choice.
