War broke out in 1914 due to forces that had been building up in Europe for years. While the Allies blamed Germany for the war too harshly, its actions certainly did directly contribute to World War I, as did those of Austria Hungary. However, each country involved fostered militarism in their country, and became in entrenched in the web of alliances and race for imperial power, all causes of the environment that led to the Great War. Therefore, it could be said that all European countries were responsible, in part, for World War I, as reflected in Documents 5, 6, and 7.
Causes of World War I World War I was the bar fight of all bar fights and was expected to end quickly. Unfortunately, the treacherous battle field held soldier's longer than expected. At first, Europe had been flourishing with colonies worldwide and had developed in technology greatly.
There were a variety of underlying causes in World War I. They were militarism, alliances, nationalism, and a mix of imperialism. Before the war Nations started to build up their arms (DBQ: What Were the Underlying Causes of World War 1, 2010, Doc 7) making a competition for dominance, and alliances are formed making powerful armies. Nations produced propaganda infuriating the citizens and giving the pride in their nation which led to nationalism. The June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Serbian Black Hand Group, caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. As their allies got involved this conflict grew into World War I (WWI). This event wasn’t the real cause of the war, it was just the spark that started it. Most people would say the causes were imperialism, nationalism, alliances and militarism.
Germany alone is forced to take the blame for all of World War I, even if everything that happened was not only their fault. Also Article 232 explains, “...Germany undertakes, that she will make compensation for all the damage done to the civilian population of the Allied and Associated Powers and to their property during the period of the belligerency…(Doc E).” The treaty forced Germany to reimburse the Allies for all the damages done, which totaled up to an enormous amount of 341 billion (U.S.) dollars, according to Doc “F”). Not only was this very difficult to achieve, it angered Germany so much that by 1933, they stopped paying the Allies altogether. Who started World War 1 and who should be blamed? World War 1 was the first industrialized war, and about 14,663,000 people died. There were many new kinds of weapons which could kill enormous amounts of people. However, it all started with the spread of nationalism. When Napoleon was the ruler of France and he conquered many lands, he spread the feeling of nationalism.
How did nationalism cause WW1? 1910-1919 Nationalism was the main cause of World War One. The direct result of it led to the militarization of Europe’s countries, nationalistic feelings in Yugoslavia, and the alliances formed before the war. Despite the common idea that the first world war started because of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, it was only a reason for Austria-Hungary to declare war. Nationalism was the driving factor to his assassination, and would not have happened without it.
Alliances and politics had also gotten in the way and caused problems that would soon bubble over and cause world war 1 to go into effect. Germany had made alliances with Austria/Hungary and Italy. But Italy had gone behind Germany’s back and made a secret alliance with France despite the agreement with Germany saying they’d protect each other if France ever came after them in a rage of war. France in response to Germany’s new alliances joined up with Russia and formed an alliance. Following the Russia/France alliance in 1892 was when France signed an agreement with Britain in 1904.
World War One, commonly referred to as the Great War, was the first war between many Euro-Asian countries, as well as American countries which began in June 1914 and ended in November 1918. Historians have long questioned the absolute cause for this war, having since pinpointed it on the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Furdinand. The Austro-Hungarian government blamed the death of the archduke on Serbian secret society known as the Black Hand. At this time, there was a nationalist movement in Serbia which caused their government to become unstable. Countries began to become influenced by the assassination and the declaration of war on Serbia in 1914.
One of the main underlying cause of the War was Alliances were being formed. They were formed in 1914, the same year the war started. The Alliances were Germany, Italy, and Austria hungary; then we had countries that were entente which were United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. Then we had Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia for killing the Duke, which rattle up the war. Another underlying cause was imperialism.
The Causes of the First World War Carmen There were quite a few causes of the first world war (WW1). The long-term causes were the militarism, alliance system, imperialism and nationalism- MAIN. The short-term cause was the fact that Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for killing Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. I personally think the most significant cause to WW1 is the alliance system and here, I will justify why I think like this. I think the most significant cause of WW1 was the alliance system.

The causes of World War I The many different causes of World War 1 were quite brief with excruciating fatalities. There were many innocent people who were just living a regular life didn’t know what was about to hit them. People like to say that there were five different causes of World war 1. Those causes were nationalism, imperialism, militarism, alliancism, and assassination.
This flawed treaty also attributed to the start of World War II. In part eight of the treaty the blame of World War I is discussed. “Part VIII – Reparations – Section I: General Provisions – Article 231. The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies” (Kirchberger 365). This excerpt from the Treaty of Versailles declares that Germany is to accept blame for the war.
