According to Long (1994), “The term mythology may describe a certain body of myths, for example, Greek, African, or Scandinavian, or it may refer to the study of myths” (p.694). These collections of narratives are superior when it comes to influencing different areas of knowledge. There are numerous types of mythology, but Ancient Greece is the one that has given an immense influence on modern society.

We look back at ancient cultures and we see a lot of art or if possible writings that contribute to our understandings of what life used to be like for perhaps a Citizen of Troy. We see several works of art such as busts or vases that heavily coincide with our knowledge of Ancient Greek and in particular their secular worshipping of the Greek gods.
Humans have had mythology for almost as long as they’ve roamed the Earth. So, what is mythology, what purpose did it serve and why has it been so important to early civilizations? According to the definition, mythology is a collection of myths or stories pertaining to a culture or religion and people have used it to pass down their culture or simply explain why natural events occur in the world. For example, Egyptians were just as curious back then as us modernized people are and they wanted answers to questions like, “where did we come from?” and they attempted to answer these questions through the manifestation of gods.

For example, the Greek myth of Athena and Arachne, it is a story of a young woman that goes against the goddess Athena, because she had thought that she was the best at the art of weaving.
Coming into this class knowing little to nothing about Greek Mythology, is a weird situation for me; the beliefs of the Greeks seem absurd to me. However, after one day of notes I feel like I have a better grasp on the topic. I have learned that the whole purpose of mythology is to explain the unexplainable; before I just thought it was all for entertainment. Another interesting fact I learned about mythology is that it is used to teach lessons. The main topic I learned the most information from was what the Greeks actually believed; I was unaware that they believe thunder and lightning came from Zeus, and they believed a chariot was pulling the sun across the sky.
