Even though these poems are targeted towards children, my favorite poet of all time is Theodor Geisel, or “Dr. Seuss” as he’s most commonly known as. I can’t name a favorite book/poem that he wrote because I think that they are all good, so I’ll name just a few and describe what Dr. Seuss was trying to convey and teach in each book. First off, I’ll talk about Green Eggs and Ham and what Dr. Seuss intended to convey and teach children about. There are two characters in this story, one being an unnamed, stubborn creature and the other being Sam-I-Am, who persistently bothers the unnamed character to at least try the food. The unnamed character outright refuses to try it, blaming it on the “grotesque” appearance of the green eggs and ham. In the end, after Sam-I-Am constantly pesters him to try it he finally decides to do just that and low and behold; he actually likes it. Regardless, what Dr. Seuss was trying to teach was that nobody should judge anything (or anyone) by their outer appearance, and that people should give things and people a chance. Seuss is “The Lorax”. The two main characters in this story is the Lorax, the protagonist who wants to save the environment, and the antagonist the “Once-ler” who let greed consume him, allowing the environment to deteriorate because of his actions and cupidity. I think what Dr. Seuss was trying to convey here was that people should be more mindful of the environment. Additionally, I also think he was trying to teach that just because someone is “greedy”, doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re a bad person at heart, but greed can consume someone and delude their morals and actions. I also think the book is a social commentary of sorts because in reality there are “big businesses” who destroy the environment with no prior thought for the regard of the plant life and wild life that reside in those
