The ear after World War 1 called the “Roaring 20s” was a time where a lot of people prospered, but many still were poor. The less fortunate wanted to be involved with the upper class, and they could only do that if they achieved the American dream F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to convey themes and to influence the plot of The Great Gatsby through the green light, East and West Egg and the billboard. One of the symbols that Fitzgerald uses is the green light that is at the end of Daisy's Buchanan dock is in the East Egg, that can be seen from Jay Gatsby's mansion in the West Egg. T.J Eckleburg. On the billboard are the doctors eyes. The billboard represents God looking down ,and judging the people. The billboard is always watching and is in every crucial scene in the novel. In the novel Fitzgerald wrote “The eyes of Doctor T.J Eckleburg are blue and gigantic- their retinas are one yard high” (27). The eyes are huge and take up the whole billboard. In the final chapters of the book where Daisy kills Myrtle with her car, near the billboard. This could be perceived as God punishing her for her sin of adultery with Tom. Justice is also served to Gatsby for adultery as well when George kills him. George shoots Gatsby because he believed it to be Gods work. This can be linked to the theme of the American Dream.
