God Is Always Watching In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the symbolism of the billboard overlooking the “Valley of Ashes” holds extreme significance. The billboard pictures big blue eyes with yellow glasses and it was an advertisement for Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, an old oculist out of Queens, New York. It is located in the “Valley of Ashes”, which is a grimy area between New York City and the “Eggs.” All of the coal and ashes used to run New York City are dumped here. The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg serve as a representation of God’s watchful eyes and also the contrast between the illusion of the American Dream and the cruel reality of the 1920s. Later, Nick goes to New York City with Tom and they pass the billboard. He then thinks about Tom’s actions and his mistress. When Nick returns home, he receives an invitation to one of Gatsby’s parties from a servant of Gatsby. He goes to the party looking for Gatsby, but surprisingly no one is invited to his parties, they just show up. Nick was the only one with an invitation. He eventually finds Gatsby and he invites Nick to go out the next day. It turns out that he wants Nick to invite Jordan to tea so they can discuss Daisy and get her to come to one of Gatsby’s parties. At Gatsby’s next party, Nick gets Daisy to attend. However, Tom is there too. Daisy does not enjoy the party, which defeats the reason for his party. Gatsby feels strange about it all because the real reason he has all these fancy parties is so that Daisy would come, and now that she is there she doesn’t even like it and Tom is there and he is not meant to be. Within the next few days Nick is able to get Daisy and Gatsby to meet again. Gatsby is incredibly nervous and when the meeting time comes, both Daisy and Gatsby are uncomfortable and
