What would you do if one of your family members turned into a giant bug? That’s the question that runs through your head when you read The Metamorphosis. Most people would say that they would take care of that person and would not care if their family member was a bug. The truth is though, you would not really know what you would do until you were put into that situation. Gregor and Grete were two of the characters who went through the most changes throughout the book. When you think about it though, Grete went through the most changes from the first chapter, to the last. In the beginning of chapter one, we know that Gregor had turned into a bug and he was worried about getting to work on time. His mind was set on getting out of bed and getting to work. On the other hand, Grete was not worried about Gregor getting to work as much as she was worried about his well-being. We know that Grete’s feelings towards Gregor were still that of caring and wanting to help him since she was the one feeding him and taking care of him. Gregor wanted to be near his family and thank his sister for all that she had done. He did not want to be separated from his family or lose any of his humanity. In the middle of the chapter and towards the end, we started to see a change in the sister’s feelings towards Gregor. She wanted to move all of his furniture out of his room because she thought it was useless to him. When Gregor caused the mother to faint, Grete got angry with him and she “raised her fist and shot him an intense glare” (Kafka 45).
