Grey’s Anatomy is an ABC show created, executively produced, and written by Shonda Rhimes. The show has been on-air for almost 18 years and is on its 19th season, currently being aired on ABC. Grey’s Anatomy really reflects current events that are happening in the world at that time. It’s a fairly old show, first airing in 2005, and was pretty progressive for that time. The show discussed hard topics that the public was grappling with at the time and the diversity was a lot more than most other shows at the time. Given that it’s a medical show, it shows disabilities many, many times and different disabilities other than paralysis or only people in wheelchairs. Specifically, the show deals with Alzheimer's disease and its implication on those …show more content…

There are a lot of online forums dedicated to talking about what the community likes and dislikes about Grey’s Anatomy (such as Reddit or Discord). I feel like people watch Grey’s Anatomy because of how dramatic and fun the storylines are and for extremely likable characters. The main five characters of the first few seasons are Meredith, Cristina, Alex, Izzy, and George. Everyone loves these characters even if you hate them sometimes but the characters are what really make Grey’s Anatomy such an amazing show. While the show objectively has quite a lot of diversity and representation, no one watches a show for 19 seasons solely because they like the diversity in it. Shonda Rhimes, the showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, won the Norman Lear Achievement Award at the Producers Guild Awards in 2015. When accepting her award she said, “It’s not trailblazing to write the world as it actually is” (Maslow, 2016), when talking about her “trailblazing” in regards to diversity and complex black, female characters on screen. Viola Davis, the lead in How to Get Away with Murder and a recent EGOT winner, introduced Rhimes at the Producers Guild Awards saying, “In a year…in which everyone is talking about diversity, she [Rhimes] is living proof that the curve that many people are behind was drawn by her” (Shonda Rhimes- Normalizing Diversity, …show more content…

The target audience is in the 18-49 year old range but many people began watching the show when they were kids and grew up loving it. The show has an audience score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.6/10 rating on IMDB, a 4.5/5 on Google reviews, and 94% of Google users like this show. There is a specific review on Google reviews from 3 years ago that, though long, really encapsulates the reason why most people love the show. “Honestly, I learned to build my values system with GA. From ‘husband trumps girlfriend, to the rules of friendship and to how a mother handles the sudden death of her husband and the donation of his organs, with her young daughter next to her,’ GA taught me what my parents didn't have a chance to learn and then to teach me. Also, watching GA is for me like visiting with extended family. When I feel low, I make cocoa, get my crisis blanket out of the closet, and watch GA. I love the moral dilemmas and how they are solved. I love how friendship, love, strength, loyalty, dignity, vulnerability, and making mistakes are portrayed. I love how every character is perfectly imperfect - like any human being. The first five or six seasons, I know the dialogue by heart - every now and then I'd start watching the whole thing from the beginning once more. Can't really say how many times it's been, but I know that for the past nine years, since I discovered Grey's Anatomy, it's
