Tony C. Brown’s psychoanalytic article on Cultural Psychosis relates Marlow’s experience to a subversive way of thinking that comes from social attitudes and cultural ignorance. Brown defines psychosis at the beginning of the article with a quote from Slovoj Žižek’s “Grimaces of the Real”, “Therein consists the most elementary formal definition of psychosis; the massive presence of some real that fills out and blocks the perspective openness which is constitutive of “reality”” (350).
