After reading the novel Twisted, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, I have become more aware of how different emotions and attitudes that people have can positively or negatively affect how they’re viewed by society. Furthermore, an individual’s attitudes and actions can also change their perspective of the world and the quality of their life. Early on in the book, we are introduced to the main character Tyler, who is an emotional, unpopular, and insecure seventeen year old senior who is hoping for things to change. Throughout the story, we follow his emotional rollercoaster filled with his thrilling highs and devastating lows. After researching astrology signs and their true meanings about specific traits, I have decided that Tyler fits within the Cancer symbol.
Wounds of the Past Battles were fought, lives were taken and wounds were made, some of which remain as an indication of victory or stay as a mark of failure. Whichever one it may be, there were different strategies that were used to try to heal injuries that occurred on the battlefield, more specifically during the Civil War. The problem was, there were more men dying of diseases than men that were falling on the battlefield. Doctors were required to have only two years of medical training, therefore medicine was not as profound back then compared to present day advancements. Imagine being captured and trapped in a camp, in North Vietnam, for six years filled with days of brutal torture and agonizing boredom. In Leo Thorsness’s novel, Surviving Hell, Thorsness and his fellow soldiers found a way to not only survive, but to thrive. Through numerous events and experiences, the soldiers survived by utilizing any means possible, both mentally and physically. It was their hope and optimism that kept them going. This can be seen when Thorsness plots his walk home.
Smile Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a book that talks about the challenges you can face during middle school. The author writes the book using her personal experience of 6th grade to high school. She is trying to let people know that there is many obstacles in life. A big part of your life includes you Middle School experience. The book’s character Raina Telgemeier happens to fall upon the many situations a Middle School can offer.
At the beginning of the novel, sixteen-year-old Steve Harmon’s life dramatically changed. The teenager was arrested and charged with the murder of a Harlem drugstore owner. Although Steve was presumably not the actual killer, his role as a supposed "lookout" for the gang that committed the crime ultimately landed him in prison. With regards to this, past events can have a major effect on the present values or attitudes of a character. Moreover, Steve’s past experience has contributed to the novel’s themes-
Various minority groups have long histories of oppression, including Native Americans, and the brutality that they endured in the past has shaped their race today. In an attempt to advocate for better conditions, Native Americans are spreading awareness for a greater future. Linda Hogan is a writer of Chickasaw Native descent and often incorporates “Southeastern tribal histories and [native] spirits and culture” (Wikipedia contributors) in her work. “Tear” takes on the perspective of a Chickasaw Native, first in the past recounting hardships, then to the present to reflect on the speaker’s connection to others in her tribe. The poem also describes the environment that surrounds natives and the neglection of their lives.
Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson is an Indigenous mythology-based story that follows sixteen-year-old Jared as he struggles with his powers, relationships and overall life. The theme of family, specifically the decisions and roles of Jared's family, significantly affects his personal growth. More particularly from the actions of Maggie Moody, Phil Martin and Nana Sophia. Maggie Moody, Jared's mother, affects Jared's morals and how he feels about violence, Phil Martin, Jared's father, affects Jared’s emotional maturity, and Nana Sophia embodies the feelings resulting from the abandonment of a family member. Maggie's violent approach to life has desensitized Jared to violence, making him less emotionally vulnerable since violence requires a lack of empathy.
In society today there are young kids that do terrible things and they don't fully understand the extent of the matter. In the book “Monster” it tells the story of a young Steve Harmon, he planned a lookout that turned fatal but he had a change of heart. The people at the scene witnessed and could identify him as the lookout. He did not pull the trigger but he was involved in the crime. Steves name was mentioned when King and Evans were discussing the plans for the fatal crime.
Vengeful Unhinged, by Jerry Sonenblick, is a book about political battles and revenge. David Sherwood, a Jew, is a successful lawyer in Arizona, United States of America. Mason Grewe, who is also a lawyer, exploits a client, and in the line of duty, David files charges against him. Eventually, Mason is stripped of his license to practice law. Out of shame, he packs up and leaves for Las Vegas, and full of hatred, he hires a spy to monitor David's activities.
Shin Dong-hyuk lived in a North Korean camp for most of his life. As of right now, there are about 150,000 to 200,000 people imprisoned in these camps. In the biography Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden, Shin Dong-hyuk is the only known prisoner in North Korea's camps to have escaped. Shin was born in Camp 14 and grew up without any knowledge of the outside world. Many things happened to him, he witnessed a fellow student beaten to death; he was badly burned over hot coals; had a finger chopped off; was lice-ridden, cold, and nearly always hungry.
In the article “In Your Face...All Over the Place,” author Jean Kilbourne examines how ads and advertising affect the way we perceive and feel. In my opinion, I agree with the way author Kilbourne describes how and why ads work the way they do. Advertising is tremendously impacting our lives, through the influence of commercials, billboards, nationwide marketing publications, movies/television, celebrity endorsements, and catchy slogans. As Kilbourne states, “Advertising is our environment. We cannot escape it”(p.57).
The Heat contains a prevalence of humor, happy ending, magnified disorder, and an uplifting existential worldview that fits the nature and composition of comedy as a genre. This film presents us with a multitude of kinds and intensities of humor which grab the audiences’ attention. There are moments within the film that cover all ends of the spectrum from droll to dry or even uproarious humor. An example of droll can be the tracheotomy scene, whereas Mullins continuously mocking the albino illustrates a more uproarious scene. Throughout the film there are a variety of conflicts and challenges that get resolved ultimately leading to the happy ending.

On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction. Poet, Nancy Mercado, worries that one day people will forget that heartbreaking day.
Is the script “A Thousand Clowns,” by Herb Gardner, is without a doubt a comedy. The script does not even come close to being a tragedy. Tragedy's usually ends in something bad happening, but the ending to A Thousand Clowns is anything but a tragedy. A Thousand Clowns is about Nick and his guardian Murray battling Social services workers to keep custody of Nick. In the end the battle is won and Nick gets to Stay with Murray.
