The Character of Jerboam
The name Jeroboam means “The people increaseth”. He was born in -975(68), his father was Nebat and mother was Zeruiah. Nebat eventually died and his wife Zeruiah became a widower. Jeroboam’s famiy lived in Zeredah that is located in the tribe of Ephraim. His father’s father is Zeruga and his mothers father was Jesse. There is no recollection of his great grandfather but many grandfathers down it truly comes down to Adam. Jeroboam’s wife was Karamat and his sons were Shilhi and Nabad. During the time of Jeroboam’s life span the different prophet, religious leader, or philosopher was Ahijah, Iddo, and Shemaiah. 5 Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.” I like this passage because a man of God tries to condemn the the altar and eluding that it is wrong to be worshipping statues. When Jeroboam puts his finger out to give the command to take the man out but his hand shrivelles up means to mean that Jeroboam is in control rather than God being in control and using Jeroboam as his tool. He received a sign from God through the man that the altar of a statue was wrong but the action of him pointing to the man and ordering him to be taken out gives the message that he does not want to be corrected by God but then receives a punishment . God has such humor and how He punishes Jeroboam because the hand of the king is used to command others. As a young man Jeroboam became a servant for Solomon(king of Israel). Through his diligent work he was promoted to be in charge of all the workers in the tribe of Joseph. “Under the rulership of Solomon he had shown aptitude and sound judgment; and the knowledge he had gained during years of faithful service fitted him to rule with discretion.”( Prophets and Kings Ch. 7) . As he was walking to Jerusalem he met the prophet Ahijah who was the prophet of Shiloh. Ahijah tore Jeroboam’s garmet into twelve pieces and handed him ten pieces saying that he will be ruler over those. He was given a command to obey God. Solomon wanted to kill Jeroboam by the fact that God had taken the tribes out of Solomon’s hand and given it to Jeroboam, but does not say according to the Bible. “Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death”(1 Kings 11:40).
