The notion that the government rules all have been repeatedly overturned throughout history. Every time a government oppresses its citizens, someone who feels the discontent of the people will arise. Whether they are seen as heroes or rebels is ultimately the public’s opinion. While heroes and rebels both have a similar purpose, the people’s opinions on their actions make all the difference. One who goes with the people's beliefs to solve their discomfort ends up as the hero of the people.

To Americans and many others around the world, the U.S. is the face of what should be a “free society,” not including every society’s minor flaws. Maybe it’s because I’m barely entering the brink of my social awareness as a U.S. citizen or maybe is it more due to recent threats to our freedom as Americans, but now more than in the past decade or so, the media has brought the image of huge protests, riots, and demonstrations into the spotlight. And unfortunately, more often than not, many of these events result in violence, aggression, and opposition. Nonetheless, people’s intentions and visions of victory surely do not aim to end in chaos and harm to our societies.
Americans who have been in this country for decades are being persecuted from the actions of right winged extremist terrorist groups. 54% of Republicans, 27% of Democrats, and 40% of Independents in the U.S feel unfavorably toward Islam practicing citizens (US Senate). Children of these Americans are being bullied and harassed. In a poll taken by Pew Research Center there is an increase of domestic hate groups. To date, there have been over 800 or more incidents of vandalism, arson, violence, and threats toward Muslim Americans (US Senate).
Conformity and group mentality are major aspects of social influence that have governed some of the most notorious events and experiments in history. The Holocaust is a shocking example of group mentality, or groupthink, which states that all members of the group must support the group’s decisions strongly, and all evidence leading to the contrary must be ignored. Social norms are an example of conformity on a smaller scale, such as tipping your waiter or waitress, saying please and thank you, and getting a job and becoming a productive member of society. It is a natural human instinct to want to be acknowledge by your peers, yet it is also important to be a critical thinker. Irving Janis in 1972 created the term groupthink. He believed groupthink occurs inside a group of similar people that want to keep from being different, resulting in incoherent decision-making. The 1957 film "12 Angry Men," uses groupthink, which influenced the verdict vote in the case of a teenager accused of murdering his father. The purpose of this essay is to examine groupthink and to represent Dr. Irving Janis’ symptoms of groupthink in the film.

America has had a tumultuous existence, replete with war, progress, and ideologies. The most formidable of these is individualism, or the shift of society’s focus from the group to the individual and a growing emphasis on their personal needs and desires. Psychologist Irving Janis explained some alarmingly bad decisions made by governments and businesses coined the term "groupthink”, which he called "fiascoes.” He was particularly drawn to situations where group pressure seemed to result in a fundamental failure to think. Therefore, Janis further analyzed that it is a quick and easy way to refer to a mode of thinking people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members ' striving for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action.
