Group Therapy Case Study

The therapy group session started promptly at 7p.m. The session was an hour long in duration. The facilitator introduced himself and the disorder he is was diagnosed with. He also stated the purpose of the group session. After the facilitator introduced himself the remaining members introduced themselves by stating their name and their diagnosis. The introduction of self went around the room so no one was left out. A sheet of paper circulated around to each group member displaying the rules of the therapy session. The rules were read out loud by the designated member holding the sheet of paper. Group members shared their feelings about the holidays and being around their family and others while dealing with their disorder. One group member stated that she had anxiety thinking about all the people she will have to interact with. Another member stated that he too had anxiety. One member had concern about his mother because she does not reside in Tallahassee but one hour away in a Hospice house for her terminal illness. He was worried about wanting to take her out of the facility for a couple of hours. A question was asked of him “what are your concerns”. He stated that his mother refuse to leave the facility every other time he goes to visit her. Scheduling the outing around her medication time has to be taken into consideration he stated. His mother is also on oxygen so that too has to be considered oxygen tank when taking her out of the facility. For example, mapping out the time span of how long the oxygen will run out. A question was asked of him “why not just let her have her way”. He wanted the entire family to see her and spend the holidays together because he does not know how much more time she has here on …show more content…

Most members shared about different medications such as Seroquel and how it had similar side effects on them. A lot of the members stated that they went off that drug because of the different side effects they were having. They also stated other medications to take as a substitute. They felt that the group therapy was beneficial to them. They stated that they enjoyed the session. The therapy group provided a safe and welcoming forum for mutual acceptance, understanding and self-discovery for many members. One member stated that the group is his safe place, where he could be himself and be supported by others with his same condition. One member stated she could not attend group for a while because of transportation issues. She felt that the group allows her to speak about her life mishaps to someone living with the same disorder. She also felt the group members can understand what she goes through day-to-day better than her family could. That member had a lot to say about her experiences of having a mood
