Group Work Project (Part 1)

In our group work project, we set out to demonstrate our own community and social action effort, in order to take a stance against the issues of domestic violence, focusing women in particular. This social issue reveals a lack of equality and abuse of power that operates in society’s gender roles, causing women, living in the margins of exploitation and manipulation. Our social action demonstrates the theories of activism in the community, with the aim of changing this social inequity present in gender roles. After consultation we got in contact with a Uniting Care women’s safe house. This demonstrates Rubin and Rubin’s (2008) concept that empowers these women thorough increasing their individual capacity to facilitate change …“in order to create social change it is essential for individuals to increase their own capacity to act, think and sacrifice on a community level”. These women voluntarily suggested some strategies for our social Action to pursue a change in the community. Firstly we attempted to plan a barbeque, to stir community engagement and provide us with the opportunity to create this space for awareness and education around the issue of domestic violence. However, this was challenging as funding and the resources were not available. After gaining our focus groups advice, we then, proceeded to adjust the social action strategy to create an educational video consisting of interviews to challenge the community’s perception of domestic violence. However, this plan was also inadequate due to the interview just being research based, lacking the social action intended. After overcoming these struggles and the miscommunication that is common amongst groups, we re-evaluated and used our initiative to create a new plan, with the limited timeframe left. After the approval of the focus group, on the third time, we managed to come together and create an informative brochure that would reach out to victims and potential victims. This resource is brought together all of the support networks available in the local community, for the victims of domestic violence, in Western Sydney to know the extent and unity of support networks and to encourage them to reach out. We distributed the brochures among with prepared Sandwiches and cookies to create a space of awareness at Parramatta campus of Western Sydney University, as our focus group advised used us that this
