Success or Failure: Based on my research of Cleveland, I believe he was a bad leader. He tried to always have the county’s best interests in heart; however, most of the time he failed to meet his goal. He was the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms as president. He did not have two consecutive terms as president because he was unpopular with the people. He was disliked because he lowered tariffs and people began to drop their support for him. His second term began with the Panic of 1893 which continued to influence people’s unhappiness with Cleveland. He was also very unreliable in his views. People thought he was not creative and having no ultimate goal for America. These ideas tarnished his reputation. Although he was criticized, he did do well for the United States of America. He helped to strengthen the executive branch. While some of the Democrats from his party did not like him, other Democrats wanted him to run for a third term. There was no limit for terms during this time. He declined and retired to New Jersey.

Even though Cleveland was aware, he was not always up to date. For example, he continued to use the Gold Standard, even though the gold holdings were falling low and the government could not support the paper dollar. He was the leader of the pro- business Bourbon Democrats. He opposed high tariffs, Free Silver, inflation, and imperialism. He tried to improve political reforms. He dedicated the Statue of Liberty when it was built in 1886. He opposed the growth of labor unions. Grover Cleveland sent the Federal Army to end a railroad strike in Chicago because the railroad strikers violated an injunction.
