Have you ever been at the wrong place at the time? That's what happened to Stanley. In Holes, by Louis Sachar, Stanley Yelnats gets sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he didn't do. I think that the theme is growing up. It has responsibility, learning and ambition. It's also about kids and they are growing up. Stanley is also growing up.

Holes has responsibility in it. Stanley teaches Zero how to read and write. He is also responsible for Zero when he looks for him. “I'm the one teaching Zero” (Sachar, page 99) Also, when Zero is too tired to walk, Stanley carries him up the mountain.
